Boost Whole-House Energy Efficiency In Your San Antonio Home With Air Sealing

Did you know that you can boost whole-house energy efficiency in just a few hours by simply sealing all the air leaks around your home? It’s easy to spot the big air leaks, but the small ones you can’t easily see can add up to a lot of infiltration. In fact, the effects of those leaks could be similar to leaving a door or window open all year long.

Where to look

Most of the air leaks in this region are around window and door frames. Inspect the joints between the window frames and your home’s exterior. If you see cracks in the seams, you are likely to have air coming into or leaving your home. If you can see daylight between your exterior doors and door frame, leaks are present. Other places to look include in your attic where your furnace flue, chimney and exhaust fan stacks leave the attic, and anywhere pipes, wires or cables enter your home.

Don’t forget to check your ducts. The ductwork for your HVAC system can have leaks that contribute up to 30 percent of your cooling and heating system’s inefficiency. Check the insulation in the attic for dirt, which can indicate loose ducts (or other air leaks).

How to seal

Once you identify where the leaks are, sealing them will boost whole-house energy efficiency immediately. Use exterior caulk for small cracks, crevices or gaps. Use expanding foam to close off larger air leaks. Fresh weatherstripping around the exterior doors is easy to apply and stops drafts immediately. Be sure to remove the old weatherstripping first and clean off any residue before applying the new product.

If you have leaks around the furnace flue or chimney, use fireproof materials to seal the leaks. You can also buy sheet metal gaskets to seal any large gaps. Seal ducts with mastic and never duct tape.

Sometimes it’s difficult to evaluate the condition of ductwork because it might be hidden in walls or wrapped. Fixing duct problems can boost whole-house energy efficiency quickly. If you’d like to learn more, contact Beyer Boys. We’ve provided HVAC services in the San Antonio area since 1990.
