Enjoy Serious Energy Savings This Fall With These Tips

As the weather gets colder, your heating needs will send your energy bills up right as holiday expenses start to impact your budget. Take advantage of the following fall energy savings to keep your checking account from being drained.

Heating Fall Energy Savings

  • Lower your furnace to 68 degrees or lower. Each degree you lower it will save about two percent on your heating bill.
  • Install a programmable thermostat to automatically drop the temperature when you’re at work or asleep for additional savings.
  • Install a humidifier so dry winter air won’t make you want to turn up the heat to avoid a chill.
  • Clean or replace the furnace filter regularly. A dirty filter allows less air to pass through, so your furnace has to run longer to heat your home.
  • Reverse your ceiling fans to the clockwise direction. This will pull cool air up towards the ceiling and help push the warm air that rose to the ceiling on its own back down.
  • Don’t turn up the heat to warm your home faster. Your home will keep heating at the same rate and the only thing turning up the thermostat even higher will do is run up your energy bill when you forget to turn it back down.

Windows and Doors Fall Energy Savings

  • Apply new caulk to your windows and replace the weatherstripping around your doors to prevent drafts and energy leaks.
  • Leave the blinds on sun-facing windows open on sunny days to allow the sun to help heat your home.
  • Cover the windows in your exterior doors.
  • Seal pet doors and letter slots to prevent drafts in doors.
  • Hang holiday lights on the inside of windows when possible. It will be easier to turn them off at night, and the small amount of heat they give off will help keep the cold outside.
