Holiday Energy Savings That Will Have You Celebrating When the Utility Bills Arrive

The holiday season may be the last thing on your mind these days. After all, it seems like fall has just begun. But it’s never too soon to begin your planning, and it’s wise to factor in energy savings. That way you’ll have something additional to celebrate–the extra money that would have gone toward your heating and electricity bills.

Decorating

Holiday lighting displays use energy. This year, decorate your tree, house, pathways and lawns with Energy Star-rated LED lights that use 70 percent less energy than incandescent light bulbs. You can attach up to 24 strings to one socket without overloading. They work indoors and outside. LED lights last 10 times longer than incandescent lights, and some LED lights come with rebates. In addition to using LED lights:

  • User timers to turn your lights on and off.
  • Consider adding tinsel, mirrors and metallic ornaments to provide sparkle and holiday energy savings.

Cooking

Use the microwave oven whenever possible for casseroles and other dishes. Your food will cook quickly and use 75 percent less power than a conventional oven.

  • Use a slow cooker for some dishes, as this appliance also uses less power.
  • Use a glass or ceramic dish for baking, and you could reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees.
  • Turkeys, hams and other meats cook more quickly in roasting bags.
  • Cook as much as you can at one time without overloading your oven.
  • Use the right size pan for the burner when you’re using the range.
  • Clean burners and replace reflectors when needed.
  • Check on baking food through the glass door rather than opening the oven and allowing heat to escape.

Heating

Holiday energy savings start with making sure your heating and cooling systems are working efficiently. Change the air filter on a regular basis, and make sure your home is sealed to prevent air leaks. Also make sure you get your fall furnace tune-up. Beyer Boys advises setting your water heater at 120 degrees to save energy.
