Keep Your Money for Souvenirs — Energy Saving Tips When on Vacation

Extra cash always comes in handy on a vacation. If you reduce energy waste at home while vacationing this summer, you’ll have more money to put aside for next year’s getaway. The following energy-saving tips can help:

  • Dial up the thermostat. Leaving the A/C running as usual is a big waste of energy, but shutting it off can let damaging humidity build up. You can lower the electric bill while you’re gone and keep humidity in check by setting the thermostat at 85 degrees.

  • Unplug electronics and small appliances. Many of these items draw electricity even when they’re turned off. You can save money by unplugging the computer, printer, TVs, coffee maker, device chargers, digital clocks, stereos, DVD players and similar items before you head out.

  • Make sure the lights are off. If you have plans to set a few lights on timers to thwart would-be thieves, replace any incandescent bulbs with energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps (Cf Ls). When you’re flipping switches, check that the ceiling fans are off too.

  • Give the water heater a rest. This one appliance can devour up to a quarter of a typical home’s annual energy budget, and much of it’s consumed when a water heater is in standby mode. You can save money by switching a gas-fired unit to “pilot,” or shutting off the circuit breaker on an electric model.

  • Close the window coverings. Before you leave, walk through the house and pull down window blinds and shades, and close the curtains in every room. This can help reduce heat gain through the glass, and lower the cost of running the A/C while you’re gone.

  • Raise the refrigerator’s temperature setting. Just a couple of degrees can make an impact on its energy consumption. If you’re planning a long trip, empty and unplug the fridge and freezer. Make sure to leave the doors slightly ajar to prevent mold and mildew growth.
