Program Your Thermostat and Save Money this Season

When you have a programmable thermostat for your heating and cooling systems, you have the means to take better control of your HVAC equipment and reduce your monthly bills. Here are some techniques you can use to program your thermostat to save money this season.

  • Use set points: Set points are preprogrammed temperature settings that automatically reduce or increase HVAC system operation based on your needs. For example, set points can turn down your heating system when you’re out of the house for the day, then increase temperatures later to ensure your living spaces are comfortable when you return. Set points can be adjusted as needed. To get the best results and the most savings from the use of set points, use the lowered settings for at least eight hours at a time.
  • Avoid using manual overrides: If you need more or less heating during the time period covered by a set point, your programmable thermostat allows you to override the settings and make the adjustments you want. However, using this feature frequently will increase operating costs and can defeat the purpose of having a programmable thermostat. Use manual overrides when needed, but do your best to allow the thermostat to change indoor temperatures gradually the way it’s designed to do.
  • Don’t make fast temperature setting changes: “Slamming” the thermostat by making large, abrupt changes in temperature settings will not make the HVAC system work better or faster. You are more likely to waste money and energy by doing this than you are to improve indoor comfort. As with manual overrides, let the thermostat gradually make changes in temperatures.
  • Maintain your thermostat: At the beginning of the season, put new batteries in the thermostat to ensure it works reliably. Have your HVAC professional inspect and adjust the thermostat during system preventive maintenance.
