Protect Your HVAC System During Your Home Remodel

Home remodeling is messy work that creates lots of airborne dust and debris. It’s easy for those particles to infiltrate your HVAC system where they can cause significant and costly damage to sensitive components. Here are some tips on how to protect your HVAC system so it makes it through a remodel unscathed.

Talk to Your HVAC Professional

It’s a good idea to discuss your plans with a trusted HVAC pro to get some general advice and tips on issues like how many registers need to stay accessible so essential airflow isn’t compromised.

Leave the HVAC System Off During Work Hours

If you don’t need it, it’s better to leave the system shut down for the duration of the project, but that may not be feasible. At a minimum, keep it off during the work day when debris is being stirred up.

Cordon Off the Work Area

Shut doors and tape up tarps or plastic sheeting on open doorways to keep dust and dirt contained in the work area. Close and seal the HVAC vents with plastic too, but follow your HVAC pro’s advice about maintaining crucial airflow.

Reduce Mess by Sanding and Cutting Outdoors

Use sanders and saws in the driveway or garage to help minimize the amount of sawdust and wood particles floating around indoors. If this isn’t possible, open a few windows in the construction area and push airborne debris outdoors with strategically placed fans.

Make Clean Up a Daily Habit

Piles of dirt and dust can build up quickly in a construction zone, so keep ahead of them by thoroughly sweeping and/or vacuuming the work area at the end of each day.

Schedule a Professional Inspection and Cleaning

When your remodeling project comes to an end, don’t forget to replace the air filter and book a service visit with your HVAC technician to have the system thoroughly inspected and cleaned. If you think debris made its way into the ductwork, it’s wise to schedule professional duct cleaning too.
