Troubleshoot Your San Antonio Home With These Tips For Energy Savings

Fall is the best time of the year for an energy savings evaluation. You survived another summer of Texas heat, but it’s still not the time to relax. Take advantage of the cooler weather to assess the condition of your home and make improvements.

Maximize your energy savings this winter with these tips:

  • Lower the thermostat. Set your thermostat to 68 degrees instead of 72 degrees and you’ll save roughly 12 percent on your heating bills.
  • Upgrade to a smart thermostat. The new generation of programmable thermostats have features that make it easier than ever to save money. They’re worth the investment and will pay for themselves quickly.
  • Find 16 hours of savings. You can lower your bills another 5 to 15 percent if you lower the temperature to 60 degrees while the house is empty and again while you sleep. Do your best to make these blocks at least eight hours long.
  • Don’t use the fireplace often. Some people like fireplaces for warmth and relaxation. The problem is, the fire feels warm to you, but heat is flowing out of the chimney so you’re losing more heat than you’re gaining.
  • Use the ceiling fans correctly. Flip the switch on your fan motor so the blades rotate clockwise, then set them to a low speed. This allows them to distribute the heat in the room, which would otherwise sit near the ceiling.
  • Seal windows and doors. Use draft guards to stop air leaks through the bottom of your doors. For the windows, pick up plastic window wraps from a local store. Just make sure it comes with a kit for easy installation.
  • Change your furnace filter. This should be done before winter arrives. Check the filter every month and replace it promptly when it looks dirty.
  • Dial your water heater down. Many water heaters are set to 140 degrees, but 120 degrees is sanitary and easily hot enough. Your heater will consume less energy.
